Sophie, who turns 52 today, also appointed president of the Devon County Agricultural Association’s during the group’s AGM in Clyst St Mary, near Exteter, where she was presented with a colourful bunch of balloons.

The royal, who was lucky enough to see a rare glimpse of winter sunshine, looked suitably smart in head-to-toe black, wearing a collared button-up dress with a white graphic print.

Sophie, who wore her blonde hair in a loose chignon, was beaming as she arrived at the group’s head office by private helicopter.

The stylish royal completed her birthday look with a pair of knee-high suede boots.

A cake made especially for the occasion was iced with the words: ‘To Sophie HRH Countess of Wessex, we wish you a very Happy Birthday 20th January 2017’.

The retiring President, Eleanor, Countess of Arran, officially handed the baton to Sophie by fastening the chain of office around her neck.

The organisation was launched in 1872 to protect the interests of agriculture and the rural economy in the county as well as organising the annual Devon County Show.

Sophie, who is married to the Queen’s son Prince Edward, then signed the visitors’ book in the County Show offices at the Westpoint arena where she was presented with a bunch of balloons.

The mother-of-two, one of a handful of full-time working royals, is currently patron of over 70 charities and organisations.

This is believed to be her second engagement since returning from the Christmas break.

Earlier this month, she visited the Corporals mess at Ward Barracks, Bulford to meet with military members’ families.

The five Rifles battalion in Bulford have been getting settled after moving from their former barracks in Germany last year.
