Prince William had taken Kate Middleton on a emotional visit to his mother’s grave just days before the couple’s royal wedding, it was reported a day before his marriage.

The prince apparently held hands with his fiancée as they walked slowly to the island where Princess Diana was laid to rest.

It is understood that the prince wanted to share his big day with his late mother as he knew how much it would have meant to her.

However, official sources would not confirm whether William and Kate did in fact pay a visit to the grave

The couple were reportedly sombre as they laid flowers at the island tomb on the 14,000-acre  Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire.

‘Diana is still a huge part of her boys’ everyday life and always will be. It is very important for Kate to share and understand William’s love and grief for his mum,’ a source told the Daily Mirror.

Proud: William wanted his mother to be with him in spirit when he got marry.

‘It was tragic that she wasn’t there to see the wedding, and that she never got to meet his bride.

‘But even though Kate never met Diana she knows what an incredible woman she was and it is very important to her she can share and understand William’s love and grief for his mum.’

However, a royal spokesman said: ‘We cannot confirm or deny when either of the princes have made visits to the graveside of their mother for the reason that it is one of the most private aspects of their lives.’

A source added: ‘This means from time to time stories will run that may or may not be true.’

Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 after apparently being chased into a tunnel by paparazzi on motorbikes.

Charles Spencer, William’s uncle and Diana’s brother, is said to have known about the visit to the spot that he has turned into a shrine to his late sister.

The entire island was blanketed in thousands of flowers laid well-wishers at the gates to the estate after Diana died.

The Island is a peaceful retreat that is known as The Oval. There is one temple which forms a permanent memorial to the princess.

The royal couple are believed  to have rowed a small boat to the island where Diana is buried.

It was reported that William showed also showed Kate the ancient arboretum  where he and younger brother Harry played when they were children.

The prince had spoken openly in the past of his grief for his mother and he knew that she would have been full of joy at seeing her first child get married.
