Princess Victoria of Sweden in tears

Princess Victoria of Sweden was overcome with emotion on Saturday when she visited the scene of Friday’s suspected terror attack in Stockholm. Victoria could be seen in tears as she laid flowers at the memorial site accompanied by her husband Prince Daniel. The Royal couple stood in silence as a sign of respect for the victims of the shocking attack. On Friday, a lorry was driven into the Ahlens department store in the Swedish capital, killing four people and injuring 15. The four killed have been confirmed as being one Brit, a Belgian woman and two Swedes. The Mail reports that one victim of the attack was an 11-year-old girl on her way home from school.

Princess Victoria, who is a mother herself to Princess Estelle, four, and Prince Oscar, one, reportedly said she felt “sadness and emptiness” at the heartless attack. She continued: “Society has shown tremendous power and that we are resisting this, that we want to resist this.” The BBC has reported that Swedish police found a suspect device inside the lorry in the driver’s seat, yet it is unknown if it is a bomb. A 39-year-old suspect from Uzbekistan, who is known to the security services, is currently in custody. The crash scene is currently sealed off as the police investigate the incident.

King Carl XVI Gustaf, 70, released a statement following the attack which read: “It is with dismay the royal family and I have been informed of the attack in Stockholm this afternoon. The background and full extent of the incident is not yet known. We are closely following the developments but our thoughts are already now with the victims and their families.” The horrifying attack comes just a couple of weeks after Khalid Masoon drove into pedestrians on London’s Westminster bridge, killing five people including PC Keith Palmer outside the Houses of Parliament. The Queen said at the time: “My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected by yesterday’s awful violence.”
