What it means if Kate Middleton has twins

The world is abuzz with news Kate Middleton and Prince William are set to add to their brood, but adding even more interest is the wildfire speculation the Duchess might be expecting twins.

British bookmakers are currently offering 20-to-1 odds the Duchess of Cambridge might be welcoming two babies next year.

“We feel it is more likely to be a boy which is the odds-on favourite, while we have also seen some bets for the next birth to be twins,” John Hill from UK betting agency Coral told OK! Online.

Whispers are growing that Kate is expecting twins.

Despite the speculation it will be twice the cause for celebration when the babies are born – with an expected due date of March 2018 – history isn’t exactly on Kate and Wills’ side.

The royal family tree reveals twins haven’t been born into the British monarchy since the 15th century, however if the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting two babies, there might be more reason for it to be a hugely momentous occasion.

The Duchess is said to be due next March.

Previously, royal protocol dictated sons succeeded their sisters when it came to taking the throne, even if the female was first born.

That all changed in March 2015 though, when royal succession rules were changed to remove gender bias.

If Kate were to give birth to twins, new succession rules would mean that whoever was born first would be next in line to the throne after Princess Charlotte.

If Kate were to have twins, they would be fifth and sixth in line to the throne after George and Charlotte.

If the twins were a boy and girl, and the female was born first, this would make her the first female to be given her place ahead of a male in the line to the throne.

Things get a little bit more complicated if Kate needs to have a caesarean, which would mean the royal gynecologist Alan Farthing would be in charge of deciding which baby would make their appearance in the world first.

Exciting times ahead!
